1)      When did SIELP begin?

SIELP began in 1996.

2)      Who sponsors SIELP?

SIELP it is sponsored by the Board of Education and CUNY

3)      What other campuses run SIELP in the summers?

4)      What are the requirements to be accepted in SIELP?

Students write a composition

Students need to improve their writing and reading skills

5)      What trips does SIELP take?

In 2006, SIELP students visited:

§             The Fraunces Tavern Museum:  Museum of Colonial and Revolutionary New York.

§             The Old Bethpage Village Restoration

In addition SIELP has taken trips to:

Trips are in connection to the reading material and activities students do at SIELP. Some of the previous trips have taken place at: The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Lower East Side Tenement Museum, NY Historical Society, Walking Tour to Harlem, Museum of African Art, American Museum of Moving Image, etc.

 

6)      What do parents think about SIELP?

Parents like the program because their children get to improve their writing, reading, and speaking skills.

 

7)      How can a student become a leader?

In order to be a leader, students have to be former SIELP students. Towards the end of the program, students who will like to become leaders get an application form where they write a composition and six students will be chosen. Leaders show interest and are highly motivated to help other students during the six-weeks of SIELP.

 

8)      What do students like about SIELP?

Students enjoy making new friends. They like to learn about the history of New York City and the United States. They enjoy learning and improving their English skills, and they have lots of fun during classes, the trips, gym, and swimming pool.

 

9)      What does a typical day of a SIELP student?

Students have six periods. Two reading and writing periods, two project class period, a computer class period and one gym period.

 

10)  What’s most rewarding about working in SIELP?

SIELP staff finds the learning and writing improvement of the students the most rewarding in the program.

 

11)  How long does the program last?

SIELP is a six intensive week program. It starts in July and ends in August.
